Our Story
Built by Hikers, for Hikers
Trailwise Gear started as a spreadsheet shared between friends trying to figure out what outdoor gear was actually worth buying. That spreadsheet became a website. That website became a mission.
About Us
What Is Trailwise Gear?
Trailwise Gear is an independent outdoor gear review and ranking site founded by Marcus Osei, a former wilderness guide with 15 years of expedition experience. The site publishes expert-ranked buying guides, product comparisons, and trail skill articles across 8 outdoor gear categories: hiking backpacks, hiking boots, camping tents, trekking poles, water filters, rain gear, safety gear, and outdoor accessories.
Trailwise Gear has helped over 50,000 outdoor enthusiasts choose the right gear. Every product ranking is based on independent research and real-world trail testing — the site accepts no free gear from manufacturers and takes no payment for product placement. Affiliate commissions from Amazon do not influence editorial rankings.
The editorial team consists of three specialists: Marcus Osei (PCT and AT thru-hiker, 400+ products field-tested), Sarah Chen (sports science graduate and ultramarathon runner), and James Whitfield (winter camping instructor and 4-season mountaineer). Together they cover every major outdoor gear category with direct field experience.
Why We Exist
The Problem We Solve
The outdoor gear industry is worth billions of dollars — and a surprising amount of that money gets spent on marketing rather than product quality. Amazon is full of gear that looks great in photos, sounds impressive in bullet points, and falls apart the first time you actually use it on the trail.
Meanwhile, the genuinely excellent gear from trusted brands often gets lost in search results flooded with cheap knockoffs and review-stuffed listings. Finding what actually works requires the kind of deep research most people don't have time for.
That's what Trailwise Gear does for you. We spend the hours so you don't have to. We test gear, read thousands of real reviews, consult with guides and athletes, and distill everything into clear, honest rankings you can trust.

How We Work
Our Values
Independence
We accept no free gear from manufacturers. If a product is reviewed on Trailwise, we bought it ourselves or borrowed it from the trail community. Our opinions can't be bought.
Real-World Testing
Lab specs don't tell the whole story. Every ranked product is tested on actual trails by real hikers in real conditions. We flag the gap between marketing claims and performance.
Accessibility
Great outdoor experiences should be for everyone. We always include budget options alongside premium picks. The goal is finding the best gear for your specific situation, not the most expensive.
Transparency
We're upfront about our affiliate relationships. When you buy through our links, we earn a small commission at no cost to you. This is how we keep the lights on while remaining editorially independent.
How We Rank
Our Testing Methodology
Every product ranked on Trailwise Gear goes through a consistent evaluation process before it earns a position in our lists.
Long-list research
We identify every major product in a category through brand research, retailer data, and community recommendations from hiking forums, Reddit, and expert networks.
Specification analysis
We document and compare technical specifications — weight, materials, waterproof ratings, load capacity, micron ratings, or other category-relevant metrics — against manufacturer claims.
Real-world trail testing
Shortlisted products are used on actual trails under realistic conditions. Our team logs miles in varied terrain and weather — not controlled lab environments.
User review synthesis
We read thousands of verified user reviews to identify patterns, long-term durability issues, and real-world performance gaps that short-term testing can miss.
Independent ranking
Products are ranked on overall value for the target hiker — balancing performance, weight, durability, and price. Commission rates never influence rankings.
Regular updates
Rankings are reviewed and updated when new products launch, brands release updated models, or significant user feedback changes our assessment.
Affiliate Disclosure
Trailwise Gear participates in the Amazon Associates affiliate program and other affiliate programs. When you click our links and make a purchase on Amazon, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. These commissions help us cover the costs of running this site and allow us to continue providing free, independent gear reviews.
Our editorial decisions are made completely independently of our affiliate relationships. Products are ranked based on our own research and testing — never based on commission rates or brand partnerships. We will always tell you what we actually think, including recommending products that earn us zero commission if they are genuinely the best choice for our readers.
