Buying Guide

How to Choose a Camping Tent

Your tent is your home on the trail. Choosing wrong means a sleepless night in the rain or a pack so heavy you dread every uphill. Here's how to match a tent to your actual camping style.

Backpacking vs. Car Camping

Backpacking tents prioritize weight โ€” 2-4 lbs for a 2-person tent is the benchmark. Car camping tents prioritize space and features โ€” weight doesn't matter if you're driving to the site. Buying a car camping tent for backpacking is the most common expensive mistake beginners make.

Seasonality

3-season tents (spring through fall) handle rain and moderate wind โ€” the right choice for 95% of campers. 4-season tents add snow load capacity and wind resistance for alpine use. Extended-season tents split the difference. Don't pay for 4-season capability you'll never use.

Capacity Math

Tent capacity ratings assume mummy-bag cocooning with no gear inside. A '2-person' tent holds 2 people and nothing else. Buy one size up from the number of people for comfortable use: a 3-person tent for 2 people gives you room for gear and some elbow room on rainy days.

Freestanding vs. Non-Freestanding

Freestanding tents stand without stakes โ€” convenient on rocky ground where staking is difficult. Non-freestanding tents (common in ultralight designs) require careful stake placement but can weigh significantly less. Most backpackers prefer freestanding for versatility.

Pole Material

Aluminum poles are lighter, stronger, and more durable than fiberglass. DAC aluminum poles are the gold standard. Fiberglass poles are cheaper but heavier and can splinter in cold temperatures. For backpacking, always choose aluminum. For car camping, fiberglass is fine.

Waterproof Rating (HH)

Hydrostatic Head (HH) measures water pressure resistance. 1,500mm is minimum for rain. 2,000mm handles most weather. 3,000mm+ handles sustained heavy rain. Also check that seams are taped or sealed โ€” even a high HH fabric fails at unsealed seams.
